About The Liver Bird Show

A magical outdoor family theatrical experience combining classic storytelling and puppetry.
Charlie J, a boy from Liverpool, is bright for his age. “Too clever for his own good,” his dad would say. He is the type of child who would rather escape to his imagination or read a book than play or watch sports. Grandma Bailey encourages his cleverness, teaching him all about the history of his city. He is particularly fascinated by the local folklore about the Liver Birds. When things get difficult at school, and just when he needs it most, Charlie J is visited by a very special creature. What if the Liver Bird really did exist?
The Liver Bird is a contemporary fairy tale by John Maguire that has been adapted for the stage by Jessica May Buxton, The Bookworm Players.
Directed by Margaret Connell, starring Samantha Alton and Ellis Murphy.

The The Liver Bird Show Story

Our Liver Bird collaboration with The Bookworm Players flew all over the Liverpool City Region this Summer with our performances and live face-to-face workshops. Our first production out of lockdown was the outdoor theatre interactive extravaganza, The Liver Bird, a collaboration with the marvellous The Bookworm Players.
It opened in Incredible Edible, Court Hey Park in the Summer and was the first theatrical play to visit Walton Hall Park in over forty years. The piece was performed throughout the Liverpool City Region, including Norris Green Park, Springfield Park and Devonfield Gardens. The Bird even flew indoors to land on stage at Liverpool Central Library as part of the Liverpool Year of Writing, Writers Bootcamp and Marketplace that saw 922 creatives and the public come together for a celebration of workshops and literary activities.
We now have it filmed by the amazing team at VideOdyssey to promote across the U.K and beyond.

We were delighted to host a performance of ‘The Liver Bird’ at Norris Green Park. The value of parks and green spaces for local people has increased tremendously during the pandemic, and it’s important for us as a group to have a wide variety of opportunities and activities in the park for our community to enjoy and benefit from. The delight on the audience’s faces – young and old alike – was a joy to see and the feedback we have received about the performance has been tremendous. Hopefully through funding & support like this from Arts Council England there will be more opportunities to bring innovative community theatre to spaces like ours in future. Thank you to everyone involved!
